Standard: MA (K) 4.) Identify coins by name, including penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.
Standard:MA (K) 6.) Explain criteria used to sort objects.
Objectives: 1) Students will be able to name four of the US coins when shown the front or back. They will be able to describe the characteristics of each coin. 2) Students will acquire observation skills as they determine each of the characteristics of the coins.
Introduction: Have the children open their bags and inspect in the coins, then ask for any volunteers to raise their hands and tell about any prior knowledge they have of the coins. Then have everyone participate in learning the coin song from the short video clip.
Activities/Procedures: 1) Break student into groups of 2-3 2) Each group will continue to observe the coins, while communicating to each other obvious characteristics like size and color. 3) In their groups, students will work together making the coins to the correct name on their worksheet using the coin song and the actual coins.
Assessments: 1) Interview/quiz each child on identifying the coins. Hold up a coin for the student and ask them the name. 2) As a class, call out the name of a coin and have the students choose which coin you said from their baggy.
